The celebration of Sant'Agata is the most important religious celebration in the city of Catania and is celebrated in honour of the city's patron Saint. It takes place every year from the 3rd to the 5th of february and the 17th of august. The first date refers to the martyrdom of the catanese Saint , while the date in august recalls her remains being returned to Catania, after they were stolen and brought to Costantinopoli as a war chest and where they remained for 86 years.

From the 3rd to the 6th of february about a million people arrive in Catania such as devoted, foreign

and curious coming from all over the world.

Along with the Envoirmental Heritage of late baroque cities of the Val di Noto (south-oriental Sicily) awarded by Unesco in 2002 the celebration of Sant'Agata results as an Etno Anthropological asset of the city of Catania in the world.
